A call for leadership in Aspen

The convergence of the mayoral race and the hiring of a new city manager, a first for our community, provides a unique opportunity for a truly fresh start.

The candidates for mayor have been spewing the usual pap on the issues (i.e., we need to fix affordable housing, we need to be good stewards of the environment and on and on). But none have stepped forward with a clearly articulated comprehensive vision for direction of the city, for example, to include refined governance, fiscal restraint and promote a “smart city” into the matrix.

Simply put, who among the candidates is willing to step away from conventional wisdom? Who can make the case that they alone recognize the potential for a substantial shift and is ready to lead the city in that direction?
