Andrew Travers named editor of Aspen Times Weekly

Andrew Travers, the arts editor of The Aspen Times and a journalist with 12 years of local experience, has been named editor of the Aspen Times Weekly.

Travers has been the Times’ arts editor since 2014 and has written an entertainment column for the Weekly covering classical and pop music, visual art, film, books and theater. His reporting and criticism has earned awards from the Colorado Press Association and Local Media Association along with prize-winning Aspen Times Weekly cover stories including an in-depth look at the Aspen Art Museum upon its opening, a feature on the art therapy movement in the Roaring Fork Valley and a profile of students in the Aspen Music Festival and School’s conducting academy.

While taking the helm at the weekly news magazine, which comes out every Thursday, Travers will continue to serve as arts editor of the Times daily and will lead the paper’s coverage of Aspen arts and culture.

“Andrew is a master of his craft and has an uncanny ability to both have his thumb squarely on the pulse of the Aspen scene and cultivate the best and most important stories to tell,” said Aspen Times publisher Samantha Johnston. “We are so fortunate that Andrew can continue to follow his true passion — arts and entertainment — while bringing his talent and drive for excellence to the ATW.”

In the past six months, the Weekly has gone through a major redesign and updated some of the local content.

Travers has lived in Aspen since 2007, beginning his time here as writer-in-residence at Owl Farm and as a reporter and columnist at the Aspen Daily News, where he later became special sections editor. He came to Aspen from New Orleans, where he worked under historian Douglas Brinkley on oral history projects and books including “The Great Deluge,” “Windblown World: The Journals of Jack Kerouac, 1947-1954” and “The Boys of Pointe du Hoc.”

Along with editing the Aspen Times Weekly, Travers will oversee Times’ portfolio of magazines including the Summer in Aspen, Summer in Snowmass and EAT titles that will hit newsstands in June.

“I am honored to work alongside the accomplished and talented Aspen Times team to tell this town’s and this valley’s story in the pages of the Aspen Times Weekly and Aspen Times magazines,” Travers said.
