The Aspen High School girls basketball team returned from the holiday break on Tuesday with a 49-32 win over visiting Ouray inside the AHS gymnasium. This was a girls-only, non-league game.
The Skiers started out hot, taking a 14-6 lead into the second quarter and a 20-15 lead into the halftime break. AHS extended its lead to seven points after three quarters before pulling away in the fourth to eventually win by 17 points.
Sophomore Zuleika Hanson finished with a team-high 20 points for the Skiers.
The win improved Aspen’s record to 2-4 overall, its other win coming Nov. 30 in a 36-16 win over Mancos. The win is significant as the AHS girls basketball program had only won a single game in each of the past four seasons, and won two games in each of the two seasons before that. The last time Aspen had more than two wins in a single season was when it went 10-12 overall in 2011-12.
The 20-point margin of victory over Mancos was the largest for the Skiers since a 41-21 win over Lake County on Dec. 1, 2012. This is the first season for Aspen under coaches James and Lindsey Aldridge.
Ouray, which plays out of the Class 2A/1A San Juan Basin league, fell to 3-3 overall.

Next up, Aspen heads to Cedaredge on Friday night to open up 3A Western Slope League play. The Bruins are 5-2 overall and haven’t played since a 57-36 loss to Delta on Dec. 22.
The Aspen boys basketball team, currently 2-5 overall, will also play Friday at Cedaredge in its first game of 2019. Both teams then play Tuesday at Vail Mountain before hosting Gunnison on Friday, Jan. 18.
