Police arrested an Aspen man Saturday after he allegedly assaulted three female relatives both verbally and physically, according to court documents.
Kenneth Maupin, 58, was charged with felony menacing and domestic violence, in addition to two counts of harassment. Maupin is the same man sentenced to six months in jail in 2015 for driving 15 passengers in a wedding shuttle van while drunk the year before.
The latest case came to light about 11 p.m. Saturday, when a resident of an apartment complex on West Main Street called emergency dispatchers to report screaming from Maupin’s unit and that a man “was ripping (a woman’s) hair and her head flew back,” according to an arrest warrant affidavit filed in Pitkin County District Court.
That woman later told Aspen police officers that she was walking down a set of exterior stairs to get away from Maupin when he walked down the stairs behind her, grabbed her hair and yanked it backward “very hard,” the affidavit states. A witness, who told police of being scared of Maupin, reported seeing him yank the woman by her hair, according to the document.
Another woman said Maupin threatened her with a knife April 23, saying “that he was going to kill her one day,” the affidavit states. Maupin has displayed a knife to both women during prior violent incidents, and grabbed the second woman by the collar of her jacket and shook her Saturday, according to the document.
Finally, Maupin berated and negatively criticized another female under the age of 18 and made her cry and leave the residence. All three women told police they were scared of Maupin, the affidavit states.
Maupin worked for a local limo company in June 2014 and was transporting 15 passengers from the Pine Creek Cookhouse back to Aspen when he began speeding, weaving, swerving, driving off the road and slurring his speech. The passengers forced Maupin to stop the vehicle and one of them drove it into town and called 911.
Pitkin County sheriff’s deputies later found a bottle of tequila in his pants pocket and an empty tequila bottle in the driver’s area of the van.
He was later sentenced to six months in jail for the incident with the wedding party.
On Monday, District Judge Chris Seldin allowed Maupin out of jail on a $2,500 personal recognizance bond because he works and has a history in the community. However, the judge also entered a mandatory protection order forcing Maupin to stay away from all three women.
