Aspen senior, parents to appear in court April 15

A 19-year-old Aspen High School senior and his parents charged with giving drugs and alcohol to minors will make their first appearance in court April 15.

Joseph Lipsey IV, 19, Shira Lipsey, 44, and Joseph Lipsey III, 56, were initially scheduled to appear in Pitkin County District Court on Monday, though a prosecutor said he agreed to postpone the appearances to accommodate lawyer schedules.

The three family members were charged last month with a total of 41 counts related to parties allegedly thrown at their Aspen Highlands-area home that included minors.

The two Lipsey parents each face one count of distribution of cocaine to a minor, which carries a mandatory minimum prison sentence of eight years and a maximum of 32 years if convicted. They also each face 11 counts of felony contributing to the delinquency of a minor and three misdemeanor counts of providing alcohol to minors.

The younger Lipsey faces one count of distribution of MDMA, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and felony contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He also faces several misdemeanors.

All three Lipseys posted $100,000 cash-only bonds and surrendered their passports after they were booked into the Pitkin County Jail last month and released.
