Winter X Games attendees this weekend will be able to easily receive public safety announcements about the event by simply sending a text message, officials said Wednesday.
“This will get them into our notification system without having to sign up,” said Alex Burchetta, director of operations for the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office.
Attendees should text “XGASP” to 888777 to receive the public safety bulletins, he said. They also can scan the QR code attached to this story and hit send to sign up.
The text will allow the person to receive automatic updates and instructions in case of issues at this weekend’s X Games, including weather-related issues or more extreme situations if there’s a threat like an active shooter, he said.
For example, three years ago 16 inches of snow fell during the Saturday of X Games and buses couldn’t reach the Buttermilk venue because of an accident at Truscott and Highway 82, Burchetta said. The new alert system would allow people to receive updates about that situation, as well as instructions on where to go to warm up, he said.
Local parents who drop their kids off at the X Games also can subscribe to the service to keep up with what is happening at the venue, he said.
