Basalt High softball sweeps Montezuma to stay unbeaten
The Basalt High School softball team stayed perfect on the season after a pair of wins over visiting Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday in the BHS home openers. Maya Lindgren pitched for the Longhorns in Game 1, leading them to a 16-6 win. That game was tied 6-6 going into the fourth inning before the Longhorns broke it open over the final three innings.
Bella Meraz pitched Game 2 for BHS, an 11-4 win. Basalt led 6-4 entering the seventh inning before five more runs put it out of reach.
The Longhorns (6-0) next play a doubleheader at Eagle Valley on Tuesday.
Basalt soccer falls to KIPP after Friday game cancecled because of weather
The Basalt High School boys soccer team played to a 3-2 loss against KIPP Denver Collegiate (3-0) on Saturday, a game hosted by Kent Denver. BHS had been scheduled to play Kent, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, on Friday, but that game was canceled due to severe weather.
BHS, now 1-3 overall, is off until play at Strive Prep-Smart Academy on Saturday.
Basalt’s Sierra Bower wins at Hotchkiss cross country invite
The Basalt High School cross country team competed Saturday at the Hotchkiss Invitational. BHS went 1-2-3 in the girls race led by standout junior Sierra Bower who finished in 22 minutes, 5.12 seconds. Freshmen Katelyn Maley (22:39.9) and Sarah Levy (22.50.12) were second and third, respectively. Senior Lily Gillis finished 10th in 24:44.05.
In the boys race, Basalt senior Tucker Bruce finished fourth in 20:25.51. Junior Noah Allen was next on the list, taking 16th in 21:30.03
