Aspen High School hockey can’t keep pace with Battle Mountain

The Aspen High School hockey team fell on the road Friday night, losing 5-3 at Battle Mountain inside Dobson Arena.

Trailing 1-0 midway through the first period, the Skiers scored three straight goals — one each by Max Ufkes, Dominic Lanese and Robert Fitzgerald — to take a 3-1 lead into the second period. The Huskies responded with three goals of their own in the second period and another in the third to pull away for the victory.

Battle Mountain improved to 6-4-2 overall with the critical league win. Aspen fell to 5-6-4 overall. It was the fifth straight non-win for the Skiers, who are next scheduled to play back-to-back games at Crested Butte on Feb. 8 and 9. A game Feb. 16 at Resurrection Christian will conclude their regular season.

Aspen Leafs 19U girls hockey beats rival Vail on senior night

The Aspen Junior Hockey 19U A girls hockey team rolled to a 5-1 win over Vail on Friday in what was senior night at Lewis Ice Arena. A goal by Mia Seltzer made it 1-0 Aspen after a period, with goals from Olivia Carr and Laney Martens in the second period making it 3-0 at the second intermission. Seltzer got her second and Charlotte Howie her first in the third period to make it 5-0 before a late goal got Vail on the board. Aspen outshot Vail 38-8 in the game.

The Leafs, who are the defending Mountain States Girls Hockey League champions, are slated to again play Vail on Sunday, this time in Eagle, before closing out the regular season next weekend with a pair of games at Summit.

Aspen girls swimming off to hot start at conference champs

The Aspen High School girls swim team was impressive in the prelims of the Southwest Conference Championships, held Friday in Grand Junction. The Skiers had numerous swimmers take first in the prelim rounds, led primarily by senior Davy Brown and freshman Laila Khan-Farooqi. The meet wraps up today with the finals, while the state meet is scheduled for next week.

Basalt High School wrestling beats Coal Ridge on Thursday

The Basalt High School wresting team traveled to Coal Ridge on Thursday, where it came away with a 40-15 dual win over the Titans. Of the 14 weight classes, only four featured contested matches, with the Longhorns winning three of them.

At 126 pounds, Basalt’s Zach Pagan beat Kyler Jones via a 14-5 major decision; at 160 pounds, Basalt’s Ruben Samuelson beat Owen Quinones via fall (2:58); at heavyweight, Basalt’s Ernesto Lopez beat Rafael Sanchez via fall (1:30).

The only loss was at 138 pounds, where Coal Ridge’s Jared Richel beat Basalt’s Nathan Rivera via a 5-0 decision.

The Longhorns next host Rifle on Thursday and travel to the Meeker dual tournament on Feb. 9. Then, Basalt will head to regionals, which get underway Feb. 15. The state tournament runs from Feb. 21 to 23 in Denver.
