Norman “Sailor Jerry “ Collins said this on Nov. 20, 1970, presumably about his art and the tattoos he did, but we think it can also apply to the Pineapple Daiquiri Cocktail, which is made with his namesake rum. With only five ingredients and three steps to make it, the cocktail is simple in its concept but bold in its taste.
The cocktail’s “bold simplicity” is actually one of the reasons we chose to share it with ATW readers just in time for Fourth of July celebrations and the warm, summer weather that is forecast to roll in to the Aspen area for the weekend.
The daiquiri is easy to make if you’re having a gathering to celebrate Independence Day with no hard-to-find ingredients and it packs enough punch and flavor payoff to keep you and your guests satisfied … and perhaps a bit tipsy after a few.

Although it’s not the traditional red, white or blue cocktail (or punch) you might gravitate toward for the Fourth of July, its use of Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum ties in to celebrating America and the originality of the people who live there.
The spiced Navy rum is named after legendary tattoo artist Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins, who, according to the rum brand, got his nickname in 1921 from his father after he “notices a similar disposition between the young troublemaker and the family’s cantankerous mule. The ‘Sailor’ was added later when he joined the Navy,” in 1928. Sailor Jerry was known for fusing American and Asian tattoo styles to create his own iconic style that is heavily used in the rum company’s branding and on every bottle, which prominantly features the classic Sailor Jerry hula girl.
So raise a Pineapple Daiquiri Cocktail and cheers to America, originality, long summer days and “bold simplicity.”
