Styrofoam coolers are a waste of money and a drag on the environment. But each year millions are sold at gas stations and grocery stores to people needing ad hoc cold storage on the go.
Cooler brand Igloo this month announced a new option. Its ReCool disposable cooler is made with biodegradable materials. The aim is to displace single-use Styrofoam coolers around the U.S. and the world.
The design is simple, including a large open area for ice and side handles to carry. A lid with cup-holder slots attaches to the top.
Igloo touts the cardboard-like coolers can keep ice for hours. They won’t wet through and can hold up to 75 pounds.
Best of all, after use the ReCool will break down and go back to its inert components. The 100 percent biodegradable materials are produced in the USA from molded pulp.
REI will begin selling the cooler this April for $9.99. Then, look for the ReCool at gas stations and convenience stores nationwide later this year, ready to tote your ice and drinks in a new, environmentally-friendly mode and manner.
