Gear Review: A new action cam from Sony

Sony this month launched the RX0 II, a camera the brand touts is the “world’s smallest and lightest premium ultra-compact camera.”

It’s an arguable statement, but the Sony does stack up well with its competition from GoPro and other action-cam companies.

The tiny cam shoots 4K video at 30 frames per second and has a 15.3-megapixel image sensor. A new processor gives enhanced color reproduction and image stabilization, keeping footage smooth.

Sony touts a wide ISO range — from 80 to 12,800 — and for glass the unit has a Zeiss 24mm f-4 fixed lens. Its minimum focusing distance is 20 cm.

But a killer feature is the LCD screen. It can unfold and tilt, offering framing-up options for shooters from multiple angles.

Now the burn: the Sony RX0 II retails for $700. For that price, you can almost buy two of GoPro’s top-end cameras.

It hit the market in early April. Check it out if you need new angles, and new features that only Sony can provide.
