Hailey Swirbul 11th in opening race of U.S. cross-country ski championships

The 2019 L.L. Bean U.S. Cross-Country Ski Championships got underway Thursday at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center in Vermont.

In the women’s 10-kilometer classic individual start, Basalt’s Hailey Swirbul finished 11th overall with a time of 32 minutes, 26.9 seconds. Swirbul is in her first season on the U.S. Ski Team and is expected to make her first World Cup start in a couple of weeks in Germany.

Swirbul is the younger sister of professional cyclist Keegan Swirbul. She also competes as part of the Alaska Pacific University ski team.

Caitlin Patterson of the Craftsbury Green Racing Project won the women’s 10k in 30:44.7. The men’s 15k classic race was won by Kyle Bratrud of Minnesota.

The U.S. championships continue today with the men’s and women’s classic sprints.
