Hauenstein still supports Shift

Hauenstein still supports SHIFT

I remain supportive of what, for me, is the core component of SHIFT. My goal and vision has been to reduce core traffic. From the inception of the mobility lab I was, and continue to support, increased usage of the Intercept Lot and frequent, convenient and comfortable shuttles from the lot to in-town final destinations.

The penalty of a mode change (car to bus) is time. If commuters can leave their vehicles at the Intercept Lot, jump on a fare-free shuttle to their final destination in less time than driving, and save money, it is a win-win solution. Traffic into town will be reduced. Commuters will not have to pay for parking, and core-circulating traffic will be reduced. I support this.

I want to publicly express my appreciation to Mayor Steve Skadron for having the courage to strive to make Aspen better. For me, fewer cars in the core is better. City staff worked diligently to forward the initiative. My nonsupport for the Lyft contract should not be interpreted as lack of support for the goals and vision of SHIFT. Nor should it be seen as not being appreciative of Ashley Perl’s (the city’s climate action manager) efforts. Being attached to the outcome can lead to disappointment and disillusionment if that outcome is not realized.

I have not given up on SHIFT. We as a community, and me as an elected representative, should always strive toward a better future. Please do not throw the mayor and staff under a RFTA bus. SHIFT is a noble project and should not be abandoned. Please support a better future for Aspen.
