“Welcome Home to Heather’s, a neighborhood place dedicated to entertaining and homemade gourmet” is at the top of the menu at Heather’s Savory Pies and Tapas Bar. Proprietors Heather Lujan and her husband, Rene, deliver on that motto every day with the love that comes from the kitchen, and their passion for operating a restaurant, which has become a local’s favorite hangout.
Open since 2012, Lujan applied her 30 years of cooking experience as a caterer and for her family and friends to the kitchen of Heather’s. She works alongside the staff daily, cooking traditional dishes and creating new ones, like her fresh fish offerings.
“People love the fish,” she said, whether it’s Alaskan cod, barramundi, red snapper, trout, striped bass or the walleye.
Where Heather’s home cooking really shines is in the filet mignon Bordelaise, a 6 oz. beef tenderloin that can be cut with a butter knife and is dressed with her mom’s bordelaise sauce. The New England-inspired pot roast, served with mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables and beef au jus, is another fan favorite dish.
Heather’s Famous Chicken Pot Pie is where it all began. Underneath a perfectly baked flaky crust is a bowl of rich, savory herb roasted chicken and a veggie medley of carrots, corn, and green beans finished with homemade cranberry sauce. Also, on the dinner menu is the Colorado raised rack of lamb. Served with a choice of mint or coffee glaze, caramelized and gruyere bread pudding and fresh vegetables, it’s a mouth-watering experience.
The daily specials for both lunch and dinner are a hit for regulars who like to be surprised with whatever creation Heather and the kitchen staff come up with. All the dressings for the salads are homemade, as are the pies and cakes which can only be described as heavenly.
Open at 11 a.m. each day, the lunch menu doesn’t skimp on flavor. The Greek lamb burger incorporates Colorado lamb, sautéed onions, sun dried tomatoes, kalamata onions, arugula and feta, for a flavor explosion. Other lunchtime favorites are the turkey and brie Panini, Cubano sandwich and lamb gyro.
Much of the southwestern flare of the brunch menu is inspired by Nana, Rene’s grandmother. Dishes like Nana’s Huevos Rancheros, Chile Rellenos, Heather’s delicious chicken posole and Eggs Benedict on top of homemade potato latkes will fuel your most adventurous weekend adventures. Whatever you choose, Heather’s is a perfect place to call your home away from home.
