Ella Trane’s only gripe was her gloves being frozen by the end of the game. Otherwise, the Aspen High School junior goalie was perfectly happy with their 3-0 win over the Roaring Fork girls soccer team Tuesday on the chilly AHS turf.
“It was a real exciting game. I’m glad I got to touch the ball and make some great saves,” Trane said. “I love beating our rival teams. It’s always a fun time.”
Unlike in the team’s 2-0 win over Delta on Saturday, Trane had to play a major part in keeping the Rams off the scoreboard, at least early on. By the end, the Skiers offense was clicking on all cylinders and had plenty of chances to add to its total.
“They started to break down a little bit but then we came out strong in the second half,” AHS assistant coach Michele Gray said. “They showed who they really are and how they can play on the field.”
Aspen led 1-0 at halftime after sophomore standout Kelley Francis found the back of the net with less than five minutes to play before the break. About 10 minutes into the second half, Francis found herself one-on-one with the goalie and she put it home for her third goal of the young season.
AHS senior Clara Maxwell had the third and final goal later in the second half.
“These have been good games to put us in check and really show where we need to put more time in,” Gray said. “The great part about it is in the second half they pull it together and these girls, when they are on, they are on.”
The non-league win brings Aspen’s record to 2-1 overall. The Skiers, ranked No. 4 in 3A, have a non-league game at Steamboat Springs (0-2) on Thursday before heading to spring break.
Roaring Fork (1-2) has nothing scheduled until hosting Colorado Rocky Mountain School on April 4, after spring break.
