Honoring our vets

On March 31, approximately 400 special veterans will be registering for the 33rd Annual National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. The Winter Sports Clinic runs from March 31 through April 5. Hosted and produced by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, the clinic includes alpine and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, curling, fishing, sled hockey, archery, and gondola/cat tours on Aspen Mountain.

It’s one of the many cool events hosted in the Roaring Fork Valley and something we should be honored to be a part of. Last year, members of the Aspen Elks Lodge No. 224 invested almost 4,000 hours of volunteer work (3,992, to be exact) in helping to make the event a success. I think everyone would like to make this year’s event the best ever.

If you come across a vet during the event, it might be a great opportunity to simply share your thanks for what they have given in supporting our country. I’m not sure about this year’s volunteer opportunities, but if you would like to explore getting more involved, please drop me a note at sfwilhite@gmail.com. Many thanks to the VA leadership and enthusiastic volunteers who continue to make this event so special.

Impressed by mountain workers, patrollers

This last snow cycle was heavy and difficult to work with. The control work I see is very impressive. The cat guys are working hard, too. Again, very impressive. And last but certainly not least, my hat is off to the Highlands Ski Patrol. Consistently, these ladies and gentlemen exude both patience and attention to detail. Furthermore, consistently, faced with tremendous logistics, save lives and keep us safe. Highlands ski patrols’ performance Thursday was exemplary.

Thankless work by city workers

I just want to give a very large thank-you to all of the city employees who have kept the roads, sidewalks and trails open this winter. We all witness the results of your hard work, whenever we go out, and use the byways in and around town. I know it takes a lot of hard work and time to get things looking and working as great as you were able to make it. Whatever they are paying you, it isn’t enough!

A lovely bingo event

Thank you, Viceroy in Snowmass, for contributing the very generous gift certificate to the Winterskol Bingo at the Pitkin County Library. The gift certificate to Toro Restaurant and lounge enabled us to have a wonderful evening and delicious dinner. The Circle of Friends organized the fun bingo event at the library and conducted the event. Circle of Friends is an organization that mixes senior citizens and high school students for life-enhancing activities.

I feel so lucky to live in such a wonderful community. Thank you to all involved.
