If we approve the Lift One corridor plan, Aspen will be able to host World Cup races in the future. Right now we can’t because the FIS refuses to allow competition in the very substandard area that the Lift 1A base has become.
When Jeff Gorsuch and Bryan Peterson first proposed a new hotel and lift, a big part of their personal motivation was to revitalize that side of Aspen Mountain so we can host World Cup races. Both of these guys are former ski racers with a deep connection to the sport.
It’s great that Gorsuch Haus will operate as a hotel, like the Limelight, Little Nell and Jerome. Hotels are where locals and visitors hang out; they are part of our social fabric. Gorsuch Haus with its bar and restaurant, rooftop deck, and slope-side patios will be open and welcoming to the public. Think of how much fun it will be to sit on the patio and watch the best skiers in Aspen ripping down Super 8 or Slalom Hill!
Moving Lift 1A down the hill is the chance we’ve all been waiting for. People have been complaining about the location of Lift 1A since it opened in 1971. Old-timers recall the days when Lift 1 loaded down near Dean Street. Newcomers wonder why anyone would hike all the way up to the hill just to get on the mountain.
Past developers have refused to consider moving the lift down the hill. Yet somehow, someway these two hotel developers (Jeff, Bryan and the Browns with Lift One Lodge) have teamed up with the Aspen Skiing Co., Aspen Historical Society, the city of Aspen and the Dolinsek family to make it happen.
This is our opportunity to bring the lift back into town. Please vote “yes.”
