My favorite aspect of
Halloween in Aspen is how the locals take ownership with enthusiastic
participation from parents and kids of all ages.
Leading
up to the fall holiday this year were costume parties and festive events
including Anderson Ranch’s Spooktacular Creepy Crafts spectacular Oct. 30
throughout the artist studios and workshops.
On
Halloween proper, chilly temperatures meant trick or treating started and
concluded on the early side at hot spots like the North Forty neighborhood,
which always goes above and beyond with decorations and cheer.
For
their first Halloween, The W Aspen pulled out all the stops with its “Nightmare
on Spring Street” party that spread throughout the lobby, living room and underground
nightclub, 39 Degrees, with live music and a DJ.
Mexican
bar and restaurant Mi Chola, which has a Day of the Dead persona day in and day
out with its décor of sugar skulls, silk roses and prayer candles, was all the
more alluring on All Hallow’s Eve. A band in the back room drew a crowd while
the bar remained filled to the gills.
The
Caribou Club’s graveyard greeted guests in the alley featuring faux tombstones
“engraved” with names of famous figures that passed away this year. For those
who dared go further, it was down the steps and into the private club for a
creepy evening — the only night of the year it’s open to one an all so long as
you come in costume.
And
for our crew’s final nightcap, it was on to Bootsy Bellows for a haunted
house-style soiree with a DJ, spooky decorations and dancing into the wee
hours.
