Mountain Mayhem: University of Colorado comes by Aspen way

“Is this a postcard?” CU head football coach Mel Tucker asked as he turned his gaze to the view behind him at the Aspen Glen Clubhouse in Carbondale.

Tucker was in town last week on the Chancellor’s 2019 State Tour across the Western Slope, joined by a legion of notable faculty from the University of Colorado at Boulder including Athletic Director Rick George, Chancellor Phil DiStefano, Assistant Vice Chancellor Ryan Chreist and Ben Broussard, assistant vice chancellor/senior associate athletic director.

“This is my favorite spot of all on the tour,” added DiStefano, who has regularly come to visit the Roaring Fork Valley over the years.

Approximately 50 CU alumni, fans and future students gathered for the reception—among them one from a graduating class as far back as the 1940s, a couple who met at a Boulder bowling alley back in college and went on to marry and have children, and even a pair of friends who were in rival sororities several decades ago and have remained lifelong friends ever since. They learned about CU admissions updates — such as the incoming freshman class had 40,000 applicants for 7,000 spots and the cumulative GPA for those confirmed students being an impressive 3.7. DiStefano shared the positive progress report for student loans structure with the goal to accept the best students from Colorado, help them graduate in four years, leave with little or no student loan debt and position them to be successful and productive citizens in this state. Guests also enjoyed hearing from Athletic Director Rick George, renowned for leading the CU Buffs to win the National Football Championship in 1991, and the school’s obligation to its student athletes, valuing academics, nutrition and mental health as pillars for their success.

Certainly a highlight of the event was the chance to meet Mel Tucker, the decorated coach with a powerhouse football resume, who was named the 26th head coach in CU Buffalo football history just last December. Tucker spoke to the group about his “no excuses operation” in CU football where his philosophy is to “win every game, be relevant every year and be in the conversation.”

CU pride was evident throughout the room from the start of the event through its conclusion when all took part in a standing rendition of the CU Fight Song, rallying school spirit before calling it a night.
