Call them the “Goal-den Girls” — an assist to assistant coach Michele Gray for that one — after the No. 4-ranked Aspen High School girls soccer team continued its offensive dominance with a 10-0 win at Grand Valley on Tuesday in Parachute.
The game ended with about 20 minutes to play; it’s the third time in four games the Skiers have scored 10 goals. They now have 37 goals over the past four games, which include a 10-0 win at Moffat, a 7-0 win over Coal Ridge and a 10-1 win over Faith Christian, which was a playoff rematch from last spring.
Scoring five of Aspen’s 10 goals against Grand Valley was sophomore Kelley Francis. It was the second time in her short AHS career that Francis scored five goals in a game — she also scored five in a 12-2 win over Grand Valley as a freshman.
Francis now has 31 goals on the season, putting her one short of tying the school’s single-season mark of 32, which she set last spring.
Also scoring for Aspen against the Cardinals were Margo McHugh, Grace Romero, Clara Maxwell, Eva McDonough and Evelyn Leibinger.
It was Aspen’s seventh shutout of the season.
Grand Valley fell to 6-4 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Aspen improved to 10-2 and 6-0, clinching at least a share of the 3A Western Slope League title with its eighth straight win. The Skiers have only one league game remaining, with Roaring Fork (6-4, 3-1) coming to Aspen on Thursday. AHS beat Roaring Fork in a non-league game on March 19, 3-0.
Before playing in Aspen, Roaring Fork first will travel to Basalt Wednesday afternoon for a non-league game. The Longhorns played at Delta on Tuesday, losing 4-3 after holding a one-goal lead at halftime. The loss dropped BHS to 1-8-1 overall and 1-4 in WSL play.
Basalt’s lone win came 3-0 over Roaring Fork on April 6 in a league game.
Aspen, Basalt baseball fall on the road
The Aspen High School baseball team fell to 0-13 overall with a 14-1 loss at Gunnison on Tuesday. The Skiers gave up 10 runs in the first inning. They host Delta on Saturday.
The Basalt High School baseball team didn’t fare much better, losing 14-4 at Delta on Tuesday. Scoreless after an inning, the Panthers broke it open with 10 runs in the second. BHS fell to 2-9 overall and will host Coal Ridge on Saturday.
