Aspen High hockey beats Crested Butte to end skid

The Aspen High School hockey team got a much-needed win Saturday, finding a way past host Crested Butte by a score of 5-4 at the Jorgensen ice rink in Gunnison.

The Titans led 1-0 early in the first period, but two quick goals by Aspen’s Dominic Lanese and Matthew Rigney made it 2-1 Skiers after a period. Neither team scored in the second.

The third period was a wild one. Crested Butte tied it at 2-2 less than a minute into the final period. AHS answered with two goals — one each by Robbie Fitzgerald and Jack Pevny — to make it 4-2 less than four minutes into the period.

The Titans rallied to get the tie with back-to-back goals within about 30 seconds midway through the period. Aspen got the game-winner with just inside five minutes to play, a power-play goal by Lanese, assisted by Rigney.

It was the first win for Aspen since beating Glenwood Springs 5-0 on Jan. 11. AHS had gone 0-4-2 in the six games since, including a 5-2 loss to Crested Butte on Friday night.
