Slick commute Monday on Highway 82; RFTA bus involved in minor incident

Slick roads are causing multiple accidents on Colorado Highway 82 in the middle Roaring Fork Valley area Monday morning near the Blue Lake subdivision at El Jebel and upvalley past Basalt, including one involving a RFTA bus.

RFTA CEO Dan Blankenship said the incident involving the bus was thought to be relatively minor, and there was no report yet on any injuries. Riders were moved to another bus.

Colorado Department of Transportation is not reporting any road closures, but social media comments indicated that some motorists were diverting onto the frontage road west of El Jebel.

A Pitkin Community Traffic Alert issued just after 7 a.m. warned that Highway 82 from milemarker 17 headed up valley eastbound is icy and snowpacked, and that motorists should expect winter driving conditions. “Please drive with caution and allow for extra travel time,” the alert advised.

Reports indicated that Interstate 70 between Parachute and Glenwood Springs was wet, but not icy this morning.

No injuries were being reported.
