As a way to define Snowmass Village as a town and destination apart from Aspen, a logo was developed that would signify Snowmass Village. The welcome/entrance sign to Snowmass Village located at the intersection of Highway 82 and Brush Creek Road in 1972 was made from railroad ties and displays one of the variations of the logo used in marketing material from the beginning of the town’s development in the mid-1960s, with the official incorporation that occurred in 1978. It was originally designed by the Janss Corporation based off the purple Canadian Thistle in the early 1960s before it was known as a noxious weed, according to Elizabeth Schultze who worked for them a short while in the early stages of development. Some variations of the flower had the center as an upside-down heart, some also included an upside-down water drop, and many were very colorful.
