Aspen girls lacrosse rolls over Battle Mountain to continue early dominance
The Aspen High School girls lacrosse team continued its torrid start to the season by beating Battle Mountain 16-3 on Tuesday in Edwards.
Junior Charlotte Howie led the team with six goals, while senior Kate Citron had three and sophomore Kylie Kenny had two. Kenny also had eight draw controls and junior Hayley Heinecken recovered seven ground balls.
AHS, which entered the CHSAANow.com poll at No. 10 in the state this week, moves to 4-0 on the season. The Skiers have now outscored their four opponents by a 72-10 margin. Prior to Tuesday’s game, AHS had been ranked No. 2 in the all-important RPI.
Next, Aspen will host Golden at 1 p.m. Saturday on Iselin Field.
Aspen High girls soccer beats Vail Mountain in return from spring break
The Aspen High School girls soccer team returned from spring break by beating Vail Mountain 4-2 on Tuesday in Vail. Kelley Francis, Payton Curley, Emily Brenninger and Clara Maxwell all had goals.
Ranked No. 9 in 3A, Aspen (3-2 overall) will host Summit on Thursday before hosting Vail Mountain in a rematch on Saturday. Tuesday’s game wasn’t a league contest, but Saturday’s will be. AHS is 1-0 in league play after a 2-0 win over Delta prior to the break.
Coal Ridge soccer plays to draw with Grand Junction Central
Two own goals by the Coal Ridge High School girls soccer team and some stellar play in net by Grand Junction Central goalkeeper Nikki Madaris led to a 3-3 tie between the Titans and Warriors Tuesday afternoon at “The Pasture” in New Castle.
Grand Junction Central jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half as Madaris took a free kick for the Warriors from 40 yards out and beat Coal Ridge goalkeeper Annie Esgar before the Warriors made it 2-0 on an own goal by the Titans after a cross into the box was accidentally knocked into the net by a Titan defender.
Coal Ridge battled back before the end of the first half as Maren Hough fired home a shot from 25 yards out with just over 10 minutes to go in the first half, making it a 2-1 game at the break.
Coming out of the half, Coal Ridge made it 2-2 as Hough scored again, but a rare mistake by the Titans on a goal kick led to a 3-2 lead for the Warriors that stood until stoppage time.
The Titans (2-2-1) host the Basalt Longhorns on Thursday for a league matchup at 4 p.m.
Also Tuesday, the Glenwood Springs girls soccer team rolled to a 4-0 league win over Eagle Valley.

Roaring Fork baseball beats Meeker in offensive affair
Playing its first game at Ron Patch Memorial Field in the first game back from spring break, the Roaring Fork High School baseball team outlasted Meeker, 17-13, in an offensive explosion Tuesday in Carbondale.
Senior Dawson Kuhl pushed the Rams over the top with a three-run home run to dead center field in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving the Rams the win.
“We were only up one run at that point,” said Marty Madsen, Roaring Fork’s coach. “We hit the ball all day, but we were locked in a slugfest. We didn’t have much of a lull offensively, but Dawson got a pitch to hit and told me later he was just trying to go back up the middle. He put a good swing on it and it carried well. It was a well-hit ball; a no-doubter. He’s been working on his approach this year because he’s usually swinging too hard and trying to do too much at the plate, but he was patient today and put that approach to good use today.”
Prior to Kuhl’s three-run homer, the Rams put on an offensive show in the second inning, putting up 11 runs to take an 11-1 lead over the Cowboys. Sophomore Graham Pietsch kicked off the inning with a lead-off walk before freshman David Good drove in Pietsch after a wild pitch, making it a 1-1 game. Senior Layne Crisp then drove in Good with a single two batters later for the first of his four RBIs on the day, before Kuhl drove home Crisp with a double, making it 3-1.
Junior Frankie Harrington then drove in Kuhl with a single to make it 4-1. A few batters later Pietsch drove in a run with a single, sophomore Finn Leahy added an RBI single, and junior Eli Nickamin added an RBI single to cap off the scoring in the breakout inning for the Rams.
Meeker came right back in the top of the third inning, putting together five straight hits to open the inning before tallying 10 total runs in the frame to take a 12-11 lead.
The Rams roared back later as Crisp hit a two-run single and another RBI single on the after, leading to Kuhl’s homer, capping off the win. Crisp had arguably the best day offensively for the Rams, going 3-for-4 with three singles, four runs batted in, a walk and a stolen base.
Roaring Fork (1-3) returns to action next Tuesday, April 9, against Paonia at Ron Patch Memorial Field.
