Aspen girls tennis holds on to beat Grand Junction in return from spring break
The Aspen High School girls tennis team returned to the court for the first time since spring break on Thursday by beating Grand Junction at Maroon Creek Club, 4-3.
“I was very pleased with everyone’s play, especially since we have had only two practices since being back from spring break,” AHS coach Steve Sand wrote. “Grand Junction is always a tough match, being a 5A school in a town with a great tennis community.”
Aspen’s wins came from sophomore Macy Hopkinson at No. 2 singles; junior Karina Keller at No. 3 singles; junior Addy Walson and senior Bliss Pekkala at No. 1 doubles; and junior Olivia Burkley and sophomore Stef Wojcik at No. 2 doubles.
The Skiers next compete Saturday against Steamboat Springs and Conifer, in Steamboat.
Aspen girls golf returns to course with tournament Wednesday in Montrose
The Aspen High School girls golf team competed Wednesday at Cobble Creek in Montrose, only the second tournament of the season for the Skiers. Zoe Guthrie shot 92 to finish in 12th, while Avery Hirsch shot 103 to sneak into the top 25.
The team is next scheduled to compete Monday at Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction. AHS girls golf coach and athletic director Martha Richards said Thursday the team had officially canceled its home tournament, scheduled for April 17 at Aspen Golf Club, as the course won’t be ready for play by that time.
Basalt track and field competes at Grand Valley meet
The Basalt High School track and field team competed Tuesday at the Cardinal Open, hosted by Grand Valley High School in Parachute.
In what is becoming the norm on the Western Slope, Basalt sophomore Sierra Bower won the girls 1,600-meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 28.45 seconds. She did not compete in the 3,200-meter run, an event she is scheduled to race in this weekend at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational in Los Angeles.
Also of note for the BHS girls Tuesday, Katie Bohannan was third in the high jump (4-9), fourth in the long jump (15-1.25) and fifth in the triple jump (29-0.75). Samantha Andrade was sixth in the 200-meter dash, Bower sixth in the 400-meter dash, and Lily Gillis sixth in the 800-meter run.
Notables for the BHS boys include Tucker Bruce, who was second in the 1,600-meter run (5:12.11), and Rulbe Alvarado, who was second in the 400-meter dash (56.14). The 3,200-meter relay team also took second.
Leighton Albright was fourth in the 1,600-meter run. Bruce was fifth in the 800-meter run and Brady Lemke sixth in the triple jump.
AJH girls lose to Wisconsin in first game of national championships in New York
The Aspen Junior Hockey 16U AA girls hockey team opened play at the 2019 USA Hockey National Championships with a 3-0 loss to the Wisconsin Selects. Played at the Northtown Center in Amherst, New York, Wisconsin led 1-0 after a period and scored its other two goals in the third.
Aspen next plays the Vermont Shamrocks Friday afternoon in its second of three pool play games. Aspen will play the Steel City Selects on Saturday. The Leafs need to finish in the top two of its four-team division to make it into Sunday’s elimination bracket.
The Ranch at Roaring Fork Golf Course is open for the season
The Ranch at Roaring Fork Golf Course is open for the season. Located at 14913 Highway 82, near Carbondale, the current hours of operation are 10 a.m. until the last tee-off at 5:30 p.m.
Green fees and punch passes are discounted until May 1. There are no tee times.
