AJH girls fall to Steel City in final game at hockey nationals
The season came to an end for Aspen Junior Hockey’s 16U AA girls team on Saturday with a 3-1 loss to the Steel City Selects at the 2019 USA Hockey National Championships in Amherst, New York.
Needing to win to advance out of pool play, the Leafs led 1-0 after a period in that game after a goal by Sage Nash nearly six minutes in. But Steel City answered with a goal of its own late in the second period for the tie and scored the game-winner at the 13:54 mark of the third period. An empty-netter two minutes later sealed the deal.
Aspen finished 1-2 at nationals, losing to Wisconsin in the first game on Thursday and beating Vermont in the second game on Friday. Despite the win over Aspen, Steel City also fell short of the elimination round, with Vermont and Wisconsin advancing to today’s tournament action out of Aspen’s division.
Aspen baseball falls twice to Standley Lake; Steamboat next
The Aspen High School baseball team traveled to Standley Lake in Denver on Saturday, falling twice in a doubleheader by scores of 15-0 and 7-4. The Skiers held strong in the 7-4 contest against Standley Lake’s ace pitcher, rallying from a 4-0 deficit to tie it in the sixth inning. AHS pitcher Jon Haisfield had a strong outing in that one, going 5 2/3 innings.
Now 0-6 after a difficult early-season schedule hampered by a lack of practice time, Aspen is scheduled to host Steamboat Springs on Monday in its home opener at Crawford Field in El Jebel.
