Aspen girls lacrosse rolls over Cate School on Saturday in California
The Aspen High School girls lacrosse team took to sunny California on Saturday where it beat host Cate School, 16-2. Cate is located just outside of Santa Barbara, a short drive northwest of Los Angeles. The Skiers also played at Cate School in 2017, where it lost, 9-4.
While it was an out-of-state opponent, the win does count toward Aspen’s regular-season record. The Skiers moved to 3-0 with the win, following a 20-0 win over Durango in the opener and a 20-5 win at Steamboat Springs the next day.
Aspen now is off for spring break, where it will spend a few more days in California. The next game on the schedule is April 2 at Battle Mountain, a makeup from earlier in the season. AHS will then host Golden on April 6.
The Aspen boys lacrosse team (1-1) also is off until April 2, when it plays Fruita Monument.
Aspen’s Hamilton 39th in Saturday 15k classic at World Cup finals
Aspen native Simi Hamilton took part in Saturday’s 15-kilometer classic mass start at the World Cup cross-country ski finals in Quebec, Canada. The U.S. Ski Team veteran finished 39th of 75 competitors in the race with a time of 38 minutes, 24.6 seconds. He was second among American men, after Erik Bjornsen, who was 18th.
Norway’s Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo won with a time of 36:10.9. Klaebo also won Friday’s sprint that secured his third straight globe in the discipline.
Sweden’s Stina Nilsson won the women’s 10k classic on Saturday with a time of 25:51.6. Like Klaebo, she had also won Friday’s sprint. The top American woman on Saturday was Sadie Bjornsen, who was 18th in 26:54.8. Jessica Diggins was 29th.
Basalt’s Hailey Swirbul got her third World Cup start in her rookie season, taking 41st on Saturday. She was 53rd in Friday’s sprint.
The World Cup season comes to a close on Sunday for the cross-country skiers with the men’s and women’s freestyle pursuit races.
Driller, O’Brien win parallel slalom titles at the U.S. ski championships
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. (AP) — Garret Driller and Nina O’Brien won parallel slalom titles at the U.S. championships Saturday at Waterville Valley.
O’Brien has won three consecutive national titles after winning the super-G and Alpine combined earlier this week at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. The parallel slalom is a first-time championship event.
O’Brien was in second, 0.08 seconds back, after her qualification run and faced Canadian and Dartmouth student-athlete Stephanie Currie in a knockout round, head-to-head final. Alice Merryweather, who won the downhill title on Tuesday, rounded out the podium.
Driller sat in third after the qualifying round and advanced to face Tucker Marshall, who injured his back and was unable to start the finals. It was Driller’s first U.S. title. Alex Leever finished third.
