A local high school senior will spend the next 18 months on probation after pleading guilty Monday to breaking into a local hotel to steal alcohol.
Lucas Velasquez, 18, pleaded guilty to felony second-degree burglary in exchange for a deferred judgment and sentence. That means if he stays out of trouble during the probationary period, the felony will be wiped from his record.
Velasquez was arrested last month along with two juvenile boys after police discovered they broke into the Mountain Chalet and stole alcohol. Velasquez also allegedly punched and broke a glass door at the Aspen Square Hotel.
The break-in Jan. 2 was the latest in a scheme by Aspen teens to break into hotels and steal alcohol. The crime had occurred before, though it was not always reported.
Velasquez must not use alcohol, marijuana or controlled substances while on probation. He also will have to pay restitution for the stolen alcohol and the broken door.

A local transient pleaded guilty to felony attempted burglary Monday and will spend the next two years on probation.
First, however, Alejandro Bolona, 48, will head to an intense, long-term treatment program in eastern Colorado to address his alcoholism and homelessness, according to court proceedings Monday.
Bolona admitted to breaking into a Snowmass Village restaurant in October and stealing a bottle of whiskey and a bottle of wine.
