The Gear Junkie: ‘Best In Show’ from Outdoor Retailer Show

Tents, knives, sleeping bags, running shoes, and more … each summer, brands congregate to launch products at the Outdoor Retailer trade show, held last week in Denver. I evaluated hundreds of products to find the best to-be-released gear for 2019-20. Here are my top five:

1. Vargo Sobata 398 Sintered Titanium-Alloy Knife

Using a new type of titanium-ceramic alloy, Vargo built a better knife. It has a blade with some wild properties, including the ability to hold an edge five times longer than common HRC 63 blade steel. In addition, the knife is light but has a solid feel in the hand with its all-titanium build.

2. Rivian R1T Electric Truck

Like Tesla for the off-road world, Michigan-based Rivian is making waves. Its electric R1T pickup truck drew massive crowds at the OR Show with incredible design elements like pass-through storage and a front trunk. Oh, and 0 to 60 mph in three seconds certainly doesn’t hurt.

3. Rab Mythic Ultra Sleeping Bag

Heat-reflective technology is not new, but Rab did it in a different way with its new sleeping bag line. The bag’s material is made in a room filled only with inert argon gas. Thin fibers are coated with titanium, and when woven into the fabric, the bag reflects body heat back to the sleeper. The result is a higher warmth-to-weight ratio for the ultra-light line.
