Yasmina Reza’s Tony Award-winning play “God of Carnage” will round out Theatre Aspen’s 2019 summer season.
The play joins previously announced summer productions of “Guys and Dolls” and “Little Shop of Horrors” along with the Theatre Aspen Summer Conservatory show “The Wizard of Oz” at the Hurst Theatre in Rio Grande Park.
“The addition of ‘God of Carnage’ to our summer slate allows us to add a high-profile, contemporary comedy to our season,” said Theatre Aspen producing director Jed Bernstein. “This hilarious play joins two classic musicals under the tent for what we think is sure to be a summer to remember.”
It will be directed by Karen Azenberg, artistic director of Salt Lake City’s Pioneer Theatre Co., in her Theatre Aspen debut.
“God of Carnage” premiered on Broadway in 2009, following a London production. The original cast included James Gandolfini, Hope Davis, Marcia Gay Harden and Jeff Daniels.
In the play, a playground altercation between 11-year-old boys brings together two sets of Brooklyn parents for a meeting to resolve the matter. As the meeting progresses, tensions emerge and the gloves come off, leaving the couples with more than just their liberal principles in tatters.
