A fast-moving storm is rolling through Aspen and the Colorado mountains and high winds are a concern as a winter weather advisory remains in effect through Tuesday morning.
The National Weather Service’s Grand Junction office predicts 4 to 8 inches of snow in the area before 9 a.m. Tuesday and winds gusting as high as 45 mph, the weather service said in Monday’s update.
In addition to difficult travel, the NWS advisory warns that the high winds could present extremely cold wind chills in the central and northern mountains.
“Visibility may be reduced to under one mile at times in blowing and drifting snow,” the advisory says. “Cold wind chills as low as 20-below-zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.”
Heavy snow in Aspen started Monday morning and is forecast to continue into the evening and overnight.
Highs for Tuesday and Wednesday are not expected to get above freezing, and another chance of snow is forecast for Wednesday evening.
