Gerard Way Has Shared How My Chemical Romance Ended Up With Liza Minelli On ‘The Black Parade’

12 years later, it’s still wild that this collaboration occurred.

It’s not unusual for bands to have guest vocalists feature on their albums- but these guest vocal features come from other vocalists within the scene.

But not if you’re My Chemical Romance. My Chemical Romance had a guest vocal feature from Liza Minelli.

Speaking to The New York Times, My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has shared how the band managed to get the movie star to appear on their 2006 album ‘The Black Parade’.

“I love Liza Minnelli.” Gerard shared.  “’The Black Parade’ was very theatrical, and we had this song ‘Mama’, and I said, ‘You know, it would be really great in this one part to get Liza’.”

He continued “Rob Cavallo, the producer, made a couple of calls and she said she would love to do it. We recorded that remotely — we were in Los Angeles, at Capitol, and she was in New York with a different engineer. It was really cool. The first time I got to speak to her was through the mixing board.”

Liza famously performed the lyric “And if you would call me your sweetheart,I’d maybe then sing you a song” in ‘Mama’.
