“The goal for us is to stay ahead of the show” – Gerard Way on The Umbrella Academy comic books.

Gerard Way has announced that he’s begun work on the fourth volume in his comic book series The Umbrella Academy.
Now a smash Netflix original series, the origins of the story are based on the comic book series from the mind of former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way.
The announcement that he’s started work on the fourth volume in the series comes at the same time as he announced that volume three, Hotel Oblivion, has finally been released in the world – after he announced that he’d started work on it back in 2009. It’ll be worth those 10 years of waiting, though.
Volume four of The Umbrella Academy will follow the narrative established in the first three volumes – Apocalyse Suite, Dallas and Hotel Oblivion. But as Gerard shared on Instagram, he’s left Hotel Oblivion on a bit of a major cliffhanger, so here’s hoping we don’t have to wait another 10 years for the follow-up.
Speaking to Radio Times, Gerard shared that he doesn’t want the Netflix series to get ahead of the books (like what happened with Game Of Thrones), sharing “The goal for us is to stay ahead of the show, and since we’re on series three [of the comics], we are now ahead of the show. So that’s a good thing.”
He continued, speaking on his timeline for the comic book “The idea with the comic is to go right from series three, take a three-to-four-month break, then go right into series four. That is kind of our schedule to keep us on track. So there is story there and it’s all planned out.”
Production has started on the Netflix adaptation of season two of The Umbrella Academy. Check out Gerard’s instagram post below:
