The Umbrella Academy Wasn’t Gerard Way’s First Television Show Pitch

Introducing: The Breakfast Monkey.

If you’re already on your third or fourth run through of the Netfix adaptation of Gerard Way‘s comic book The Umbrella Academy, you’re not alone.

But The Umbrella Academy isn’t the former My Chemical Romance frontman’s first foray into the world of television.

Back in 2001, before My Chemical Romance even existed, Gerard co-created an animated story alongside Joe Boyle, and pitched it to Cartooon Network.

The show itself was pitched as The Breakfast Monkey- the story of a Scandinavian monkey chef, sharing the importance of breakfast.

Sadly Cartoon Network rejected the pitch, citing similarities to their existing show Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Still, all’s well that ends well, as if it had been picked up we may have never got My Chemical Romance. True story.
