Lady Antebellum may be a supergroup full of big personalities, but don’t expect any behind-the-scenes drama because of it. During an interview in Nashville during the recent Country Radio Seminar, the trio opened up about how they stay tight as a band and keep egos from ruining the power of their music.
Formed in 2006, Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott came together to bring the world huge hits like “Need You Know,” “I Run to You” and most recently, “Freestyle.” And ever since those first days of recording, Lady A have been just as committed to bringing those perfect onstage harmonies to bear off the stage, as well.
“We’ve all watched these bands on Behind the Music. We know how this goes, and we’re not going to do that,” Haywood says of the band’s early decision to keep drama out of the picture, according to People. “Unless we love this, let’s do something else. But we love it and each other, and it’s been a great ride since then.”
For his part, Kelley says that one of his biggest challenges early on was learning to listen to his bandmates before simply stating his opinion. He says that the band’s first year was the hardest and points to an influential meeting with a communications specialist to help work out the kinks and get everyone on the same page. Haywood adds that things only work when everyone is on board and happy with group decisions.
“We’re not the kind of band that it’s two against one or one person’s right and one person’s wrong,” Haywood says. “It’s always been about us agreeing to do something 100 percent every time.”
At the end of the day, Scott says that the biggest factor in keeping Lady Antebellum together is their love for each other and their love for their music.
“When we don’t always see eye to eye, we always come back to the truth that the three of us are so much more special and there’s a magic there that could never be captured individually,” she reveals. “Honestly, that’s just putting your pride aside and accepting that you can’t go through life alone.”
Lady Antebellum are currently hitting cities across Europe on their Wheels Up world tour and will kick off a series of shows in North America starting in May. With months spent on the road, onstage and off, the trio will certainly have lots of opportunities to put their no-drama approach to the test!
