NEWS: 2015 FIS AWSC UPDATE 2-4-2015

centurylink_logo_297Today started with great anticipation for the men’s super-G competition and ultimately resulted in a postponement of the race until tomorrow, due to significant accumulations of snow on Beaver Creek’s Birds of Prey Men’s race course and gusty, uphill winds. Fans ended up with a powder day and were still able to participate in all of the non-skiing events and activities scheduled throughout the third day of the championships.

Drivers tested their skills at the Audi driving experience located at the Harry A. Nottingham Park in the center of Avon. Participants learned driving techniques with ice elements and over parcours equipment from professional drivers while testing out the quattro® all-wheel drive technology in the Audi S3, Q3 and allroad. The Audi driving experience is open Feb. 3-13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Feb. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Aprés Avon free concert series and street fair debuted yesterday with a performance by rock band Town Cavalry and continued today at 2 p.m. featuring headliner The Travelin’ McCourys. The free Aprés Avon events continue daily with music, food, drinks and special celebrity guests.

This evening’s Medals Ceremony was cancelled due to the postponement of the races, however Andreas Gabalier will still take the stage to perform a free concert in Championships Plaza (Solaris) in Vail. The free concert is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Tomorrow, on day four of the championships, the men’s super-G is re-scheduled for 11 a.m. The change in the race date and time also means that tomorrow’s planned men’s and ladies’ downhill trainings have been changed as follows:

  • The men’s downhill training (originally scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 5 at 11 a.m.) is cancelled and will not be re-scheduled.
  • The ladies’ downhill training (most recently scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 5 at 10 a.m.) has been re-scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow.

RMX Skijoring in Minturn kicks off at noon tomorrow. Skijoring is a winter sport where a person on skis is pulled by a horse, a dog (or dogs) or a motor vehicle. The Men’s Super-G Medals Ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. at Championships Plaza (Solaris) in Vail followed by the Ladies’ Downhill Public Bib Presentation and a free concert by Mix Master Mike. International opera superstar Anna Netrebko also will perform at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for Netrebko’s performance at vilarpac.org.

Each day throughout the event window, fans are also welcomed to breakfast in Beaver Creek Village and an International Experience on the ice rink following the races, live music and a street fair at Après Avon from 2-5 p.m., Sierra Nevada’s Winter Beer Camp in Vail Village beginning at 4 p.m., and plenty more.
