Underground Sound‘s winter concert series kicks off on Monday, Jan. 21, with Blitzen Trapper, an experimental folk-rock group.
“We’re definitely experimental folk and rock,” said frontman Eric Early. “It’s like that experimental folk mixed with classic rock.”
The band recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of their most successful album, “Furr,” and they plan on revisiting that album as well as playing hit from the rest of their career.
“We’re going to play some stuff from all of our records,” Early said. “We’ll get the fans’ favorite stuff.”
The band formed in 2000, but Early considers 2007, the year they started touring, to be when the band truly began.
“Before then, we were just partying,” said Early.

As part of the Underground Sound series, the band’s performance is intended to introduce new music to the Vail Valley, and with the band never having played here before, it’s a two-way street.
“It’s always great to get an opportunity to (introduce people to new music),” Early said. “We’ve played all over Colorado and we always do well there. Fans really respond to us out there.”
The band consists of five members: Early, who writes the songs, plays guitar and sings, Erik Menteer on keyboard and guitar, bassist Michael Van Pelt, Marty Marquis on vocals and the melodica (a hybrid of a keyboard, a harmonica and a clarinet) and Brian Adrian Koch on the drums.
