EDWARDS — Normally winter-sports coaches dread winter break — it’s hard to come back from a two-week break and Mom’s great pie.
Battle Mountain basketball apparently liked the break as both of their varsity squads finished the first full week of play with 3-0 records.
The Huskies boys knocked off Summit County, 66-54, Friday night.
“I would say that we needed that break,” Huskies coach Philip Tronsrue said. “It was good for refocusing. I rejuvenated us. We got three wins, two league wins and back-to-back wins at home.”
Most definitely, as the coach would say.
Fernando Reyes continued his hot hand with 17 points, while Uziel Olivas had 14. Liam McKenny was also in double-digits with 10.

At 6-6 overall and 2-0 in the 4A Slope, next week is a big one for the Huskies. They host Palisade on Tuesday and then head to Steamboat Springs on Friday. In the early going, the Bulldogs and Sailors appear to be the class of the league.
“We’re going to see if we can battle for the league title,” Tronsrue said. “I think we’ve shown a substantial increase in out playing ability and out steadiness. I think our team as a whole is getting better.”
And, yes, your schedules are right: the Battle Mountain girls take on Palisade at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, followed by the boys at 6 p.m.
Speaking of the ladies, they went off in the second half, smashing Summit County, 60-21.
Audrey Teague led the Huskies with 14 points and Gabby Caballero had 12.
Devils fall at Palisade
PALISADE — Not that anyone would be scoreboard watching, but Palisade took care of Eagle Valley basketball on Thursday.
The Devils boys fell to the Bulldogs, 64-31, while the girls lost, 37-13.
Eagle Valley’s teams are at Glenwood Springs on Tuesday.
