The board of directors of HomeCare & Hospice of the Valley has announced that group founder Markey Butler has retired. During her 10-year tenure, the organization expanded services in Pitkin, Garfield and Eagle counties.
“I am honored to have served as the first Executive Director of (the group) since its inception, and humbled by the many patients and their families in three counties who benefited from the care given by this organization,” Butler said. “It is my pleasure to welcome our new executive director, Sylvia Allais, and work with her as the baton is passed. Sylvia will continue our long-standing tradition of caring for all who are in need of home health and hospice services.”
Allais received a baccalaureate degree in nursing science & midwifery from the University of Johannesburg, South Africa and completed graduate studies in nursing administration and education at the University of Pretoria. She specialized in adult and adolescent psychiatry and taught Fundamentals of nursing, psychology and sociology at a nursing college. After moving to Connecticut, she became a U.S. citizen and worked at the Hospital of St. Raphael in neonatal intensive care while case managing adult and pediatric cases in home health.
In 2004 she joined The Connecticut Hospice Inc. as a nurse leader and worked in leadership capacities including supervisor of clinical services, director of home health, director of hospice, chief quality officer & vice president of compliance.
“I am so grateful to be here, surrounded by the beauty of nature, and am honored to be part of an amazing team of professionals,” Allais said. “Good health is the greatest gift, and the loss of the ability to live life as usual is challenging. HomeCare & Hospice of the Valley affords patients the ability to recover, regain, and maintain health or reduce suffering, and offers end of life comfort and grief support to patients and their families. It is my goal to continue the mission and grow community partnerships which will contribute to a healthy community and ensure positive outcomes for patients and families, regardless of where they are on the continuum of health.”
HomeCare and Hospice of the Valley, a 501(C)(3) nonprofit, is the only state licensed and Medicare-certified hospice care provider between Denver and Grand Junction. The nonprofit hospice model ensures that no one is denied hospice services due to a lack of insurance or financial resources.
