Several Garfield County schools will be celebrating Bike to School Day together, as drivers should be ready to share the roads next Tuesday.

Garfield County Clean Energy Economy for the Region energy consultant Brandon Jones said drivers need to be a little more cautious heading to and from work as they will be seeing a lot more elementary students on the bike paths.

Schools participating this year include:

Glenwood Springs

  • Glenwood Springs Elementary
  • Sopris Elementary
  • Riverview School

Carbondale

  • Carbondale Community School
  • Crystal River Elementary

New Castle

  • Kathryn Senor Elementary
  • Elk Creek Elementary

Rifle

  • Highland Elementary
  • Graham Mesa Elementary

Silt

  • Cactus Valley Elementary

Parachute

  • Bea Underwood Elementary

Approximately 3,000 schools will be participating in Bike to School Day this year. May is National Bike Month.

“By starting with children on their way to school, communities become safe places for everyone to walk and bike,” Nancy Pullen-Seufert, director of the National Center for Safe Routes to School, the coordinating agency for Bike to School Day, said in a press release. “Bike to School Day events are a great way for communities to rally around making safety improvements that benefit children, which ultimately benefit the community as a whole.”

Bike to School Day is organized by Garfield Clean Energy, Garfield County Outdoors and the schools. It will be sponsored by Roaring Fork Transportation Authority and Alpine Bank.

Welcome tables will be set up at each of the schools for students, where snacks, giveaways and safety tips will be provided, Jones added.
