The Glenwood Springs High School theater production “Mamma Mia” has been nominated for four awards in the Denver Center’s Bobby G Musical Theater Awards this year.
The Bobby G awards “are the high school equivalent of the Tony’s,” said GSHS theater director and AP English teacher Kate McRaith, who was pleased the show is receiving attention.
“Between the cast and crew we had over 80 students involved with Mamma Mia! as well as the support of a phenomenal group of parents, faculty, and community support. We had five packed houses of sold out shows,” McRaith said.
The nominees from GSHS include:
- Best actress in a supporting role for Molly Hancock’s portrayal of Rosie
- Best actor in a supporting role for Jacob Cheney’s character Bill
- Outstanding achievement in lighting: Tammy Girardot, Julia Novy, Sequoyah Recio, Keanan Bell, and Ariana Griffiths
- Outstanding achievement in costume design: Alexander Tucker, Matt Jensson, Katelyn Brennan, Julian Ingle Lewis
Cheney’s older sister Abbie Cheney was the runner-up for the 2016 Bobby G award for best actress in a leading role for her work in “Anything Goes” at GSHS.

Last year, GSHS students Sophie Carnoali and Cadie Harrison took home the award for outstanding achievement in choreography for the musical “Crazy for You.”
The 2019 Bobby G awards ceremony, complete with Tony Awards-style musical performances, will be held 7 p.m. May 23 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver.
