Glenwood Springs’ Coulter Strautman scored on the power play with 39.8 seconds left in regulation to lift the Demons over Battle Mountain hockey, 3-2, Thursday night at the Eagle Pool & Ice Rink.
Glenwood was on the power play after Huskies goalie Logan Gremmer got whistled for a slash on the Demons’ Sean Mooney with 1:47 left.
As the buzzer went off, Mooney helpfully clapped his stick to the ice at the top of one of the circles not far from Gremmer.
With the win, the Demons improve to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the Peak League. The Huskies drop to 4-7-1 overall and 2-2 in the league.
A goal from Glenwood’s Dylan Webster goal staked the Demons to a 1-0 lead on the power play early in the first period.
The Huskies started to crank with a booming shot from the point from Alex Parliament. Somewhere in a mass of Huskies’ and Demons’ bodies was Dillon Flaagan who redirected with his stick for the equalizer.
Webster scored again in the early ticks of the second period, but Parliament was quick to answer with another goal to make it 2-2.
“We did a fairly good job of ham and egging it all night long, when one of us made a mistake someone was their to cover … we need that,” Demons senior Sean Mooney said after the win.
Added coach Tim Cota, “We were extremely proud of our group for being patient, fighting through some adversity and getting that all important power play goal at the end of the game, two power play goals on the night …100%, that will win you the close games.”
The Demons are right back on the ice Friday at home with a non-league matchup against Chaparrel at the Glenwood Springs Community Center rink. Game time is 7:45 p.m.
