Any concerns about a possible let down for the Glenwood boys hockey team after a disappointing 3-2 loss in the final second of play at Summit over the weekend were quickly Zambonied from the ice Monday at Standley Lake.
The Demons scored in each of the three periods, including an early goal by Sean Mooney and solid play in goal by Hunter Hadsock. That gave the visiting team some needed momentum en route to a 3-1 win over the host Gators.
“We responded well from the previous game loss, as we were able to let it go and move on in a positive fashion,” coach Tim Cota said of the victory as the team headed into the holiday break.
Mooney’s goal came at 7 minutes, 12 seconds into the first off an assist by Ryan Kotz. Kelton McPherson added the second Demon goal at 13:21 in the second period, assisted by Dylan Webster.
Webster found the Gators’ net again at 5:23 in the third, and Standley Lake was held scoreless until time was nearly expired.
Hadsock recorded 24 saves on the night.
“Hunter had a great game for us,” Cota said. “He looked confident in the net and kept the puck in front of him the entire game.”
Cota also noted the offensive play of Webster.
“He’s a very hard player to defend when he has the puck. His quick lateral movements and shifty puck control make him hard to read defensively,” Cota said. “He can give the opposing defense nightmares.”
Glenwood lost one of its key defenseman, Max Mencimer, to a broken wrist in the Dec. 21 game at Summit, but the Demons were able to move Cole “Astro” Houston back to defense and it worked.
“The D were able to jump up in some plays offensively, and we knew our forwards were backing us D up, so we trusted each other,” Houston said after the win. “It really adds another element to our game that is hard to defend when we can do that.”
Glenwood enters the break at 2 wins, 1 loss, and will resume play Jan. 4 with a non-conference game at Woodland Park.
