The pairings are set for the Class 4A state basketball playoffs, and the Glenwood Springs Demons boys and girls will start the show on the home court with Friday and Saturday games.
The Demons boys, at 20-3, enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed, earning a first-round bye. They’ll have a Saturday date against either No. 31 Weld Central (14-9) or possibly league rival Rifle (10-13), which enters the tournament as the No. 34 seed in the 46-team tournament.
The Rebels and Bears are set to square off in the first round Wednesday night in Keenesburg.
As long as Glenwood keeps winning, they will be playing in front of the home fans all the way through to the Final Four, which is slated to be played at the Denver Coliseum March 13-14.
On the ladies side, Glenwood Springs (20-3) enters as the No. 12 seed, and Rifle (9-14) earns the No. 43 slot in the 46-team field.
The Lady Demons also earn a first-round bye, and will face the winner of the Lewis-Palmer (21) and Widefield (44) matchup on Friday night at Chavez-Spencer Gymnasium in Glenwood.
If No. 5 Erie wins its second-round game and Glenwood also wins, the Demons would be on the road for the Sweet 16. Meanwhile, Rifle travels Tuesday night to play No. 22 Weld Central (17-6).
3A opens postseason with District Tournament
Playing in a different postseason format from the 4A teams, the area 3A boys and girls — Coal Ridge, Grand Valley, Roaring Fork and Basalt — battle it out in the Western Slope District Tournament this week.
Several opening-round game schedules were still being set Sunday evening, but, on the boys side: No. 2 Coal Ridge (14-5) will face No. 7 Aspen (12-8). The Skiers were 70-35 winners over Cedaredge in Saturday’s play-in game.
No. 3 Grand Valley (12-7) will play No. 6 Roaring Fork (5-14), and No. 8 Basalt (4-14) has a play-in game against No. 9 Olathe (3-16).
For the girls, No. 4 Roaring Fork (12-4) hosts No. 5 Coal Ridge (11-8) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Carbondale; No. 3 Grand Valley (14-5) will host No. 6 Moffat County (12-7); and No. 7 Basalt (9-9) travels to face No. 2 Cedaredge (16-3).
The semifinals and finals will be played Friday night and Saturday at Grand Junction Central High School.
