Landscape Logic: It’s garden and home show season

Beginning this weekend and over the next few months, garden and home shows will be popping up across the state: Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, Greeley, Denver, Salida and more will welcome homeowners and gardening enthusiasts to learn, plan and look forward to enjoying their landscapes in the warmer months.

Go prepared. Make a list of questions or write down project ideas so you can make the most of your time and find the exhibitors that have the information you need.

Those displays are more than just pretty. They can give you great ideas for solving a problem in your landscape or making a colorful change to a landscape you love.

You won’t get a one-hour free consult at a garden show, but you might get quick advice or a lead on where to find more detailed answers to your questions. For reliable advice, look for companies that are involved with green industry associations, like Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado, which promote sustainable landscape practices and professionalism. Ask if they have Landscape Industry Certified Technicians on staff.

Make notes of plants, features and tools that you like. Take photos if possible. Then, bring your notes to your local retailer or discuss them with your landscape professional. Make sure before you make any purchases that you are choosing the right plant for the right place.

Finally, don’t forget about water conservation. Ask about possible rebates from utilities for upgrading to a water-wise sprinkler system. Learn about the latest water-saving technology. Look for low-water plants to save on your water bill too.
