Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Clifford K. Callaway, MD, 73, of Avon and formerly of Charlotte, N.C., passed away from complications following heart surgery on December 22, 2018.
Cliff was born in Oklahoma City and was a lifelong and passionate Sooner fan. He attended the University of Oklahoma for both his undergraduate studies and medical school. He met his wife, Althea Trevor, during his internship at Vanderbilt Hospitals in Nashville, Tenn. They married in November of 1971.
Unafraid of risk, Cliff was a successful entrepreneur, founding North Carolina’s first urgent care centers in 1979. Headquartered in Charlotte, ProMed Minor Emergency Centers was a highly successful business serving central and western North Carolina for almost 30 years.
In 2008, Cliff retired to Avon to pursue his passion for skiing. For the past six years, Cliff was a guest host at Beaver Creek and also served as a host for the Town of Vail. He dearly loved showing guests around the valley he loved so well.
After moving to the valley he began to bike and could often be found pedaling up Vail Pass on sunny summer days. This culminated in his participation in Ride the Rockies 2018.
Cliff is survived by his wife Althea and his sister-in-law Janice Callaway of Oklahoma City. He is also survived by his four children, their spouses and five grandchildren: Anna (Jeffrey) Sturm, Whidbey Island, Wash.; Patricia Callaway and Tom Crabtree, San Francis-co; Nick (Kari) Callaway, Loveland, Colo.; and David (Arvette) Callaway, Eugene Ore.
