Hosting the Roaring Fork Rams Thursday afternoon at Glenwood Springs Middle School, the Glenwood Springs Demons baseball team picked up an important 14-3 win in non-league action, thanks in large part to an 11-run third inning.
After the Rams left the bases loaded in the first two innings, the Demons broke through offensively with three runs in the second inning before scoring 11 runs in the third inning to take a 14-0 lead. The Rams tried to battle back, scoring three runs in the fourth inning, but it wasn’t enough as the Demons picked up the 11-run win.
Against Roaring Fork, Glenwood recorded just four hits as senior Liam McMahon, senior Dylan Lee, and senior Chano Gonzalez all doubled in the win, while sophomore Wheatley Nieslanik singled for the Demons. As a team, Glenwood drew eight walks, with Nieslanik, freshman Blake Nieslanik and junior Cole Houston drawing two walks each. Senior Tyler Dollahan was hit by pitch twice in the win.
Gonzalez led the Demons with three runs batted in, while McMahon drove in two runs. Blake Nieslanik, Wheatley Nieslanik and Lee added one RBI each.
On the mound for Glenwood in the win, Gonzalez worked two innings, allowing two hits while striking out five and walking three. Lee worked one inning, allowing three earned runs while walking two and striking out two. Wheatley Nieslanik and junior Sam Fitzwilliams worked one inning each, and each struck out one hitter.
There were no individual stats available at the time of press for Roaring Fork.
The win sees Glenwood Springs improve to 11-7 (6-1 in 4A WSL) overall on the year. The Demons return to action Monday as they host Palisade in a 4A WSL doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
The loss drops Roaring Fork to 4-12 (3-2 in 3A WSL) on the year. The Rams return to action Saturday against Gunnison in league play at 11 a.m.
BASEBALL
Coal Ridge 10, Rangely 0
On the road Thursday afternoon for a nonleague matchup against the Rangely Panthers, the Coal Ridge Titans baseball team rolled to a 10-0 win.
Coal Ridge scored seven runs in the second inning and three runs in the fourth inning, rolling to the mercy-rule win.
Against the Panthers, junior Jared Lund led the Titans with two singles and one RBI, while junior Ryan Kotz, junior Lane Stecklein, sophomore Carson Miller and junior Colby Bilson recorded one hit each in the win. Miller drove in two runs, while Bilson and sophomore Colton Westphal added one RBI each.
On the mound for the Titans, Lund worked five clean innings, allowing just two hits while walking six and striking out five.
As a team, the Titans walked nine times, led by two each from Stecklein, Lund and Westphal.
The win over the Panthers improves the Titans to 9-10 (3-3 in 3A WSL) on the year. Coal Ridge returns to action Saturday against Cedaredge at home at 11 a.m.
