Traveling to Grand Junction Thursday afternoon for the 4A Region 1 meet, the Glenwood Springs Demons’ cross country team saw standout girls runners Sophia Connerton-Nevin and Ella Johnson – a freshman and a sophomore, respectively, finish 3rd and 5th respectively, qualifying for the 4A state championship meet later this month.
Connerton-Nevin finished 3rd overall behind Eagle Valley’s Samantha Blair and Battle Mountain’s Grace Johnson, crossing the finish line with a time of 17:51.28, earning a spot in the state meet in her first season at the varsity level. Johnson joined Connerton-Nevin in the top 5 with a fifth-place finish, crossing the line just 7 seconds after her teammate with a time of 17:58.75.
The two underclassmen were the only Demons to qualify for the state meet for the boys and girls. Outside of Connerton-Nevin and Johnson in the girls’ race, junior Sophia Vigil finished 50th with a time of 20:53.65, while junior Maya Elias finished 51st with a time of 20:55.10.
Sophomore Emma Barsness placed 52nd with a time of 20:55.37, while sophomore Maria Carlson placed 55th with a time of 20:59.63.
In the boys’ race, sophomore Quinn MacPherson placed 60th for the Demons, recording the highest finish for the boys on the day, clocking a time of 17:41.61.
Junior Dalton Deter placed 65th with a time of 17:48.05, while junior William Berkheimer placed 84th with a time of 18:26.56.
VOLLEYBALL
Glenwood Springs 3, Summit 0
Hosting the Summit Tigers Thursday inside Chavez-Spencer Gymnasium, the Glenwood Springs Demons girls volleyball team remained undefeated in 4A Western Slope League play by sweeping the Tigers by scores of 25-16, 25-10 and 25-16.
Against the Tigers, senior Kaitlyn Johnson continued her strong stretch of play, recording 13 kills, 20 digs, and 2 aces.
Senior Shanik Zambrano chipped in with 7 kills and 14 digs, while junior Charlotte Olszewski added 7 kills. Senior Emily Nilsson turned in another strong all-around night with 8 kills, 5 aces, 15 digs, and 24 assists.
Montrose 3, Coal Ridge 1
Looking to bounce back after a tough road loss Tuesday to rival Grand Valley, the Coal Ridge Titans girls volleyball team played better at home Thursday night, but fell to the visiting Montrose Indians in four sets.
Against Montrose, the Titans fell by scores of 21-25, 25-16, 14-25, and 17-25.
Junior Taylor Wiescamp led the way with 9 kills and 7 blocks, while junior Brecken Guccini added 8 kills and 2 aces.
Senior Lyanna Nevarez chipped in with 16 digs and 4 kills, while junior Phoebe Young recorded 10 assists, 3 kills, and 8 digs. Junior Ari Cornejo contributed 9 assists and 4 kills, while senior Taylor Roberts added 7 digs.
