Playing on the road for their third consecutive Western Slope League game Tuesday night, the Glenwood Springs girls basketball team shook off a shaky first quarter to out-score the host Tigers for the remaining 24 minutes of play for the 60-52 win.
“We came out pretty flat tonight, and Summit came out blazing,” Glenwood coach Rhonda Moser said of a 17-16 first quarter that favored Summit.
“I told the girls, sometimes you have games like that,” she said. “The goal was to stay focused, stay calm, stay disciplined and come away with a win.”
The win keeps the Lady Demons perfect in the 4A league standings at 7-0, with a 15-3 overall mark and a 13th state RPI ranking heading into the week.
After falling behind early, Glenwood came back with a 12-8 second frame to hold the 3-point lead at halftime, but early foul trouble also became an issue. Steady scoring and key rebounds in the second half turned the tide Demons red.
Senior Michelle Marshall was huge on the boards for the Demons in the second-half, and ended up with 18 points toward the winning effort. Senior Natalya Taylor chipped in 11 points.
“Sometimes wins aren’t pretty, but you can sure learn a lot,” Moser said. “It was a great situation for us to be in and see how our team responded.”
Summit dropped to 6-9 overall and 2-5 in league play with the loss.
Results from the boys game were not available at press time. Both Glenwood Springs teams take on Rifle at home Friday night in 4A WSL action.
Rifle girls 28, Basalt 26
The host Basalt Longhorns raced out to a 19-9 lead Tuesday night over Rifle at the half, including a 10-2 scoring advantage through the first 8 minutes of play of the non-league contest.
But the Lady Bears (6-11, 4-2) responded, shutting out Basalt 6-0 in the third and outpacing the host team 13-7 in the fourth for the 2-point win. The Longhorns drop to 6-7 overall.
Other scores: Boys — Grand Valley 55, Paonia 29; Girls — Grand Valley 53, Paonia 18.
