Depth in the swim lanes and on the spring board propelled the Glenwood Springs High School girls swim and dive team to two meet wins Friday and Saturday.
The Demons won a triangular meet with Summit and Aspen high schools at Summit County on Friday, and also topped Aspen in a dual meet at the Aspen Recreation Center on Saturday.
Glenwood’s event winners at the Summit meet were:
- Kylee Smith in the 200-yard freestyle swim with a time of 2 minutes, 5.89 seconds
- Abbie Scruton in the 1-meter diving competition with 196.35 points
- The Demons’ 400-meter freestyle relay team of Smith, Haley Diemer, Ellie MacPherson and Amy Madsen, with a time of 4:01.16
And, at the Aspen meeting on Saturday, Glenwood’s event winners were:
- Amy Madsen in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:06.56
- Kylee Smith in the 50-yard freestyle, 26.37 seconds, and the 100-yard freestyle, 57.13 seconds
- Abbie Scruton in the 1-meter diving competition, 198.37 points
- And the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Madsen, Sophia Moon, Ellie MacPherson and Smith, 1:50.48
The Demons also had numerous swimmers and divers score team points by placing in the top 5 of the respective events to come out on top in team scoring at both meets. Download the full results here:
Glenwood hosts its final home swim meet of the season this Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Glenwood Springs Community Center. Action begins at 11:10 a.m.
Demon hoops teams win at Junction
Glenwood High School’s boys and girls basketball teams both started the new year on the right foot, scoring wins on the road at Grand Junction on Saturday.
Big second quarters for both teams — a 17-7 run for the girls and a 21-6 stretch for the boys — had the host Tigers trying to play catch-up in the final 16 minutes of play.
The Glenwood girls hung tough for the 33-22 win, while the boys were victorious, 56-39.
Both Demons teams stand at 7-3 on the season and open 4A Western Slope League play Tuesday night at home versus Summit High. Varsity game times are 5:30 p.m. for the girls and 7 p.m. for the boys, in the Spencer-Chavez Gymnasium at GSHS.
Glenwood hockey falls 4-3 at Aspen
The Demons boys hockey team (4-2 overall, 0-2 league) got a taste of just how tough the Western Slope League will be this season in a 4-3 loss at Aspen on Friday night.
The host Skiers (3-4-1, 3-2) opened fast to take a 2-1 lead in the first period and held the margin through the final 34 minutes of play for the win.
Glenwood’s goals came from Ryan Kotz, Connor Powell and Colter Strautman.
The Demons will have a chance to get back on track Wednesday night on the home ice at the Glenwood Community Center versus Battle Mountain (3-4-1, 2-0). Game time is 7:45 p.m.
